Solaris was first published in 1961, today it is Stanislaw Lem's best-known work and has become a permanent classic of the science fiction literature trend. The novel tells the story of a research mission, sent to an alien planet to make contact with an alien form of intelligence. It touches on the themes of human powerlessness in trying to understand the Universe, the pointless escape from one's own memories and remorse, and the futile attempts of science to contact other forms of existence.

The reverse side of the silver cylinder depicts a scene that is the finale of the entire novel. The main character, a scientist who has arrived on Solaris for research purposes, explores the surface of the living ocean, which presents futuristic shapes before him. The obverse depicts one of the graphics illustrating the novel by Daniel Frost. The coin has been subjected to refinement, the background of the reverse is a metallic print, the star has been covered with gold and some elements with glow-in-the-dark paint.
