The aurora borealis is a phenomenon mainly associated with the Arctic Circle of the northern hemisphere. However, it can also be spotted from the area of Australia and New Zealand. It is a phenomenon caused by the solar wind, whose particles - protons enter the earth's atmosphere at just the right angle, caused by the strong magnetic radiation of the earth in those regions. Auroras in the northern hemisphere are called Aurora Borealis, while in the southern hemisphere they are called Aurora Australis .

The reverse of this silver coin depicts the aurora borealis against the night sky, rising above a mountain range and reflected in the water. The entire spectacle is observed from a boat, the prow of which is pointed directly at the phenomenon. The aurora is made entirely of holographic film, in order to render its specifics as well as possible. At the bottom is the inscription AURORA AUSTRALIS. The obverse of the coin depicts the right profile of Queen Elizabeth II, along with information regarding the metal the coin was made of, its sample and weight.
