The California 5 Goldback banknote features Abundantia, the personification of abundance and prosperity. She stands amid the picturesque, rolling vineyards of Sonoma Valley—one of California’s oldest and most highly regarded wine regions. The history of these vineyards dates back to the early 19th century, when the first grapevines were planted here.

Abundantia holds bunches of ripe grapes in her hands, symbolizing the bountiful gifts that are the fruit of the dedicated labor of many generations. Right next to her is the California quail—the state bird—a reminder of the natural beauty and diversity of the “Golden State.” The layer visible under UV light, in turn, reveals a ladybug, long regarded as a symbol of good luck.

In the distance stands the Mission San Francisco Solano. Founded in 1823, it is the last and northernmost of the twenty-one California missions. It was also the only mission established under Mexican rule, after Mexico had gained independence from Spain.

The entire composition pays tribute to the extraordinary abundance that defines California’s agricultural heritage.
