The 1 Cedi Aurum gold banknote made of gold is the country's first legal tender using patented Aurum technology. This banknote pays homage to the "cedi," or shell money - a form of currency that enabled trade in goods and the movement of people in Europe, Africa and the New World. The issue commemorates the Republic of Ghana's long history as a gold-producing country. In 2018, the Republic of Ghana officially overtook South Africa to become the largest gold producer on the African continent.

The obverse depicts African Liberty shown as a young Ghanaian woman in profile, along with additional elements such as the Ghanaian coat of arms, the prominent Star of Ghana (created from a security microprint) and another coat of arms. The reverse features a second Ghanaian coat of arms and a traditional cedi shell.
