In the Chinese lunar calendar, which divides time into repeating 12-year cycles, the year of the ox comes second, after the year of the mouse that preceded it. According to Chinese tradition, it was the ox that was supposed to be the second to make it to land, thanks to the fact that, while swimming across the river, it carried on its back the mouse that jumped ashore first. Many Chinese to this day associate human character traits with animal symbols. They believe that being born in the year of a particular animal influences our behavior and life.

The Lunar III series is available in a variety of weights and in a variety of bullions - gold, silver, or platinum. The featured coin is the smallest gold issue, weighing 1/20th of a troy ounce. Its reverse depicts an image of an ox surrounded by bamboo. The obverse is a likeness of Queen Elizabeth II, inverted in right profile - one of the most common images on modern collector coins. Surrounding it are the technical data - the coin's weight: 1/20 ounce, gold test: 9999 and the denomination of five Australian dollars.
