Gold bar as a wedding gift - a unique gift for the bride and groom
Until recently, it was customary in Polish wedding tradition to give practical gifts. Over time, however, wedding fashion has changed - it is now far more common for brides and grooms to receive symbolic envelopes of banknotes. Although there are many ways to creatively give cash, the gesture of handing it to anyone is itself quite impersonal. The perfect bridal gift should therefore combine the practicality of money and the uniqueness of a personal gift. A gold bar is an ideal example of this. In today's post, we'll explain why it's worth gifting it to the newlyweds and give you some tips on how to choose the right piece.
Gold as a wedding gift - or how to give more for less?
Gold is a unique bullion. For centuries, it has evoked associations of wealth, prestige and luxury among people. Giving a gold bar for a wedding is therefore associated with a certain symbolism. Presenting it to a young couple is a timeless way of wishing them good luck and prosperity. The value of a gifted gold bar for a wedding is greatly enhanced by the mere fact that it is presented by a loved one. However, it is worth approaching the subject as a serious investment. A gold bar given as a wedding gift is a unique ornament and a wonderful keepsake. And yet, in the event of more difficult times - e.g. job loss, high inflation or sudden illness - this gift can prove to be a real lifeline. This original idea for a unique gift will be perfect especially for newlyweds who are just planning to buy a home, travel the world or invest on their own.
The main difference between a bar and money in an envelope is that the value of the gifted notes is not fixed. This can be explained very easily using an example. Let us say that a bride and groom getting married in 2018 received £4,000 in an envelope from one of their guests. Inflation was 1.6% at the time. The bride and groom made a joint decision to put the money away. It was tucked away - whether in a drawer or in a bank account - until 2022. And although not a single note has disappeared from this pot of £4,000, it turns out that the value of this money is much lower. Why? Because there has been inflation of more than 17% in 2022. This means that we will buy much less with the PLN 4,000 than in 2018. Therefore, if young people have been saving for, for example, a trip, the purchase of some home appliances or renovations, they may have to add to the amount they have collected - even if it was perfectly deductible until recently.
In the case of gold gifted for a wedding, the case is quite different. Suppose that the same couple also received a 1-ounce bar. In 2018, the purchase price of such a quantity (depending on the month) was approximately PLN 4,500. The received gold bar as a wedding gift was hidden by the newlyweds in a safe place. Four years later, they decided to find out what its value was in 2022. One can only imagine their surprise upon seeing a price in excess of PLN 8100 per ounce. The calculus is simple - the bar received at the wedding had almost doubled in value. The PLN 4,000 received in cash has lost value, while the same amount placed in gold has only doubled. Consequently, the person who invested in the bar gave the newlyweds more for less.
Gold for a wedding gift - what do you need to know and check?
Of course, the example explained above was based on extremely favourable gold rates and very unfavourable inflationary values. Many people may therefore consider that investing in this bullion is absolutely reliable and always involves high returns. However, it is worth emphasising again that the gold rates shown above are extremely favourable. It is enough to take a look at the charts with the rates of the past years. You can see on them the steep drop in gold in 2014 - an ounce cost only PLN 3700. At that time, previously purchased bars or coins were losing value almost three times. However, fluctuations in the exchange rate of gold do not mean that it is not worth investing in it - especially if it is to be gifted to someone close to you. All you need to do is give the young couple a gift with the necessary information.
If a gold bar is given as a wedding gift to a couple who do not regularly track bullion prices, they should be pre-initiated about gold prices. However, it is worth doing this after the wedding - after all, this is not the time for serious discussions about money! After the party is over, the bride and groom should be instructed on how to store the bar they receive. It is a good idea to keep it in a place where it will not be exposed to any damage - gold is a very soft metal, quite susceptible to scratches. Next, it is a good idea to let the youngsters know where they can monitor the current bullion price. In the age of the Internet, the price can be checked on many different trusted portals, which publish daily updates about the gold market. Employees of banks, mints or investment metal showrooms also have such information. At the very end, it is worth instructing the newlyweds where they can sell the gold bar they received as a wedding gift. If the exchange rate is favourable, they can take the bullion to a jeweller, pawnbroker, numismatic shop or the previously mentioned investment metals showroom. It is also possible to sell a gold bar privately - for example, through auction portals or those with sale advertisements. In this way, you bypass the entire margin, which in the case of investment metal showrooms or jewellers can be quite high. It is worth bearing in mind, however, that selling gold on your own can take time, and buyers may try to negotiate the price. It is also worth setting clear and transparent terms for the sale. The best solution would be to invite the buyer to your home so that they can view the bar and pay for it on the spot with cash or a quick transfer. In this way, young people will avoid the adventures of sending the bar by courier and avoid possible fraud.
Which gold bar to buy for a wedding gift?
The precious metals investment market abounds in gold bars of various weights. Earlier, we mentioned such 1-ounce ones. Although their timeless form and large size may tempt those with investor's souls, it is worth measuring up. If the decision to buy a gold bar for a wedding has already been made, it is important to select it under possible funds. Many mints and investment metal showrooms offer smaller pieces that are priced significantly lower than 1-ounce bars. We are talking here about bars having, for example, 1, 2, 5 or 10g. The smallest pieces are available for as little as approximately PLN 200-400 (depending on the manufacturer). Some manufacturers, such as C.Hafner, also offer so-called ‘smart packs’. These are sets consisting of ten 1-gram gold bars. Each piece is contained in a separate blister that can be detached from the sheet. This solution makes it possible to sell individual bars or the entire set.
For small gold bars given as wedding gifts, many mints and showrooms offer personalisation of the piece purchased. It may be housed in a decorative coincard blister with graphics relating to the wedding ceremony. Sometimes, gold dealers are even able to make an engraving on the bar. The gold bar for a wedding gift can then include, for example, the initials of the newlyweds, the date of the ceremony or wishes. Such a gift will serve as a reminder of the special day until it is sold.
However, it is worth remembering in this wedding gold rush to buy investment bullion only from trusted sources. If the bar is bought from a private individual, ask the seller for documents such as a certificate of authenticity - confirming its weight and purity - and a purchase document from a mint or investment metals showroom. The bullion should also be in an unopened certipack. A bar purchased from a trusted dealer is a guarantee of high quality, which the gifted bride and groom can then exchange for a substantial cash injection. As you can see, gold is a gift that is not only stylish, but also extremely cost-effective.
