In the fickle world of investing, there are few things you can be completely sure of. One of them is that silver is often undervalued by experienced investors. Beginners following in their footsteps are also wary of this bullion, thus betting on the safer gold or the more exciting platinum. In today's post, therefore, we will lean into the unique precious metal that silver undoubtedly is. Is it worth investing in it? What should you keep in mind when first buying physical or virtual silver? We will explain everything in today's post. We invite you to read it.

Is it worth investing in the silver market?

This is a question that many investors ask themselves before placing capital in the silver market. This is because gold tempts them much more - it is said to be safer and, above all, guarantees higher returns. It turns out, however, that the unpredictability of silver prices can prove very beneficial for those who care about quick profits. After all, it is worth remembering that rapid declines go hand in hand with equally rapid increases. What does this mean? Just look at a concrete example.

In September 2022, the price of investment silver per ounce was around PLN 84. This was the biggest drop recorded since February of the same year. At the same time, investing in silver was never as profitable as it was in September 2022 - at that time you could buy about 11 ounces of pure fine silver for PLN 1,000. Over the next few months, silver recorded successive ups and downs - the price rose to over PLN 100 per ounce, only to sleep back below PLN 80. The metal, however, entered the new year quite steadily. The price charts show that, with the exception of a brief period in March, the price of silver did not fall below PLN 90. May 2023 turned out to be very favorable for investors of this precious metal - the price per ounce exceeded PLN 108. This means that the 11 ounces purchased in September can already be sold at a profit of about PLN 200. This amount seems small, but it is worth noting that we are talking about a range of only eight months. Already in the past, silver has reached prices both very high (about PLN 120 per ounce) and very low (about PLN 70 per ounce) in a short period of time. The conclusion? Investing in silver can yield impressive returns if you remember to keep a regular check on precious metal prices.

It is also worth bearing in mind that silver is more accessible to investors than gold, whose price per ounce has not fallen below PLN 8,000 since the beginning of 2022. This is a very high amount for those taking their first steps in the precious metals market. Therefore, starting with relatively cheap silver can be a great lesson for novice investors who want to understand the functioning of the rates without losing a lot of money.

Investing in silver - what to opt for?

Silver can take various forms - elegant jewelry, granules or even cutlery. However, it is assumed that investment instruments are products made of sample 999. The greatest interest is primarily in bars and bullion coins - that is, the so-called physical silver. Contracts for Difference (CFD) and Exchange-Traded Funds (ETF) are also worthy of attention. In their case, we are already talking about virtual bullion, also called paper bullion. These are two different types of investing in silver, whose returns depend on many different factors.

Investment in physical silver

Investment in silver bullion coins and bars is by far the most popular form of capital investment in this precious metal. This is due to the fact that physical bullion is tangible, which gives the investor a sense of security. Another advantage of investing in physical silver is also the absence of counterparty risk. This means that the investment does not depend on the ability of another party to meet its obligations.

Investing in bullion coins or silver bars is a great way to protect your capital against increasingly rampant inflation. It is a much less heavily traded metal than gold, so the products produced from it boast very high availability. On the plus side, there is also a low threshold for entry into investing in silver - manufactured from this metal are relatively cheap. It is worth noting here that both bullion coins and silver bars are widely accepted by banks and mints around the world. This makes it possible to sell these products regardless of where you are. This is especially important for those who choose to invest in silver coins for collector reasons. The versatility and low price of this bullion allows individual pieces to be exchanged between investors from different countries and even continents.

However, it is worth remembering that investment in physical silver also has its drawbacks. These include the difficulty of valorization - as tangible bullion does not generate additional income in the form of dividends or interest. It should also be borne in mind that investing in silver coins or bars requires taking steps to ensure adequate security. Physical bullion should be stored in a special locker, which can be rented from a bank or a company that provides such lockers for a fee. However, it is worth bearing in mind that this generates additional costs. However, investment in physical silver is recommended for any person who is just beginning his adventure in investing in this bullion.

Investment in virtual/paper silver

Investment in the previously mentioned CFDs and ETFs is an alternative to buying physical silver. It is much less popular due to its lack of tangibility and high counter-party risk. It is directly related to the possibility of a fund's counter-party defaulting on its contractual obligations. Since the counter-party risk is quite high, investment in virtual silver is recommended only to experienced investors. However, it is worth keeping it in mind as a possible option for diversifying an investment portfolio.

Virtual silver is a rather abstract concept for beginners. This is because it is an investment that one owns only on paper. By owning it, one can, for example, have shares in a fund that invests in silver, or contracts that promise the investor the right to a certain amount of silver in the future. The big advantage of this way of investing is the ease of management - for example, using a smartphone or computer. So there is no need to rent a storage locker or buy a safe. In addition, investing in virtual silver allows you to buy a small amount of it, rather than in bars or coins. However, it is worth starting your adventure with physical bullion in order to build a basic investment portfolio.

Buying silver - how to buy investment silver in coins or bars?

Is it worth investing in silver coins or bars? Definitely yes. At the very beginning of the adventure of investing in silver, minted products can prove to be a great way to invest capital. However, it is worth noting that both coins and bars should be bought only from trustworthy places.

One hundred percent genuine and accredited silver products can be purchased primarily from mints and banks. Both of these establishments are required by law to have only original products in their offerings, the authenticity of which is certified. Investment silver purchased at a mint or bank can therefore be freely sold throughout the world.

Banks usually limit their offerings to Polish products. The assortment of mints, on the other hand, often includes products from all over the world. Investing in such silver bullion coins as the Australian Kangaroo, the Vienna Philharmonic or the Canadian Leaf is not only a great business decision, but also an interesting way to develop a new hobby. Collecting coins of different designs can become a real passion for any investor who appreciates the artistry of talented designers. However, it is worth remembering that both mints and banks add a margin to the products they sell. It is the difference between the purchase price of the raw material (e.g. silver) and the selling price of the finished product (e.g. coin or ingot). Margin is unequal, so it is recommended to check the offers of different distributors before buying.

Virtual silver - when is it worth trying to buy silver CFDs?

Investment in silver bullion coins or bars is often able to bring adequate profits to a novice investor. However, diversification of the investment portfolio can help multiply the capital placed in this metal. This is where CFDs come to the rescue. However, it is advisable to wait to buy CFDs until the first investments bring profits. After all, it can take a long time to find a reputable broker of paper silver. So it is worth buying investment silver in the form of bars first, in order to place the first capital and be able to think about increasing it.

Investment in virtual silver should be preceded by a thorough analysis of the market. It is also worth deepening your knowledge of how CFDs and ETFs work. A great option for first-time buyers of this type of investment may be to talk to a professional financial advisor. The basis for skillful investment in virtual silver is to use a reputable, experienced broker. When searching for the right specialist, it is worth considering that it is regulated by the relevant regulatory authorities. When investing in virtual silver, it is also necessary to take the right strategy, which will also include a specific goal - for example, multiplying the capital three times or obtaining a set amount.

Disadvantages of investing in physical silver and silver ETFs

As with any investment, silver also has its specific disadvantages. In addition to those previously mentioned - specific to a particular form of bullion - its high volatility is worth considering. Silver's instability can be compared to a double-edged sword. In the event that it manages to buy it cheaply and sell it dearly, it is certainly beneficial to the investor. The situation is different when the investment in silver has consumed most of the savings capital. Then large profits and huge losses can be separated by a matter of even a few hours. It should also be borne in mind that the demand for silver is strongly dependent on the condition of individual industries. If any industry using the metal goes through a crisis, it is felt by investors. Then low prices per ounce of silver can persist for several months.

Is it profitable to invest in silver? If you are a novice investor - as much as possible. With regular tracking of prices, even a small capital can double its value. However, larger amounts are worth investing in investment gold. Silver coins and bars or silver contracts, on the other hand, can be a hedge for a smaller portion of capital.
